EAST PROVIDENCE — Recognition for athletes from the 2018 fall sports season continues to be announced, including the respective all-league honors for East Providence High School football players.
The Townies returned to the Division I playoffs this past season and had two players noted for their performances on the field. Senior Dion Hazard, who spent much of the fall as the EPHS starting quarterback, was selected by the league coaches as All-D-I on offense at running back. Likewise, for defense, Townie junior Kaleb Almeida was chosen All-D-I for his effort at linebacker.
In addition to the coaches honor, Hazard and Almeida were recently recognized as their team’s offensive and defensive Most Valuable Players, respectively, at the Providence Gridiron Club’s annual football banquet at the Quonset “O” Club.
Of note as well locally, city resident and Moses Brown School senior Jaden Pena was selected by the coaches as the All-D-I tight end/wide receiver.
Soccer
The EPHS soccer teams struggled this fall, the girls in their new digs at the Division II level and the boys in the revamped Division I ranks, but individuals still performed well enough to earn notice by their league coaches.
Junior striker Alyssa DeOliveira was selected first team All-Division while classmate and keeper Mia Jackson was chosen for the third team on the girls’ side.
Similarly, the EPHS boys had a pair of players — senior forwards Leandro Frias and Paulo Schultz Lyra — earn accolades. The Division I coaches chose Schultz Lyra for the first team and Frias for the third team. Also, senior defender Tyler Martins earned a spot on the All-Academic team.
Girls’ volleyball
The EPHS girls’ volleyball team managed to grasp one of the last bids into the Division I playoffs where the Townies won a match before falling to eventual state champ North Kingstown.
In leading the locals all season both offensively and defensively, senior middle hitter Emma DaSilva was the lone Townie selected All-Division, earning first team I-B honors.
