EAST PROVIDENCE — customer was stabbed and taken to hospital after trying to thwart an armed robbery attempt at the Town Wine & Spirits liquor store on Newport Avenue in Rumford late Saturday evening, Dec. 2.

Two suspects in the theft fled the scene, according to East Providence Police Detective Lieutenant Raymond Blinn. Officers and the EPPD K-9 remained in the area following the incident to conduct a search for the assailants.

Witnesses told police the suspects entered the store wearing masks and wielding weapons. The victim intervened and was wounded in the ensuing altercation. The injury suffered were not life threatening, Lt. Blinn said.

The suspects later left the store with an undisclosed amount of money, he added. The incident took place at approximately 9 p.m.

(Updated, December 3, 11:45 a.m.) Lt. Blinn issued an update on the incident the following morning, stating EPPD "confirm the robbery/stabbing that occurred last night in East Providence is connected to the robbery that occurred earlier in the night in Pawtucket. Both departments are working together to solve these crimes of violence."

The EPPD also published a photo of the alleged suspects taken from security cameras located on the Town premisses.

The investigation is ongoing. Lt. Blinn urged anyone with information on the robbery should contact the EPPD at 401-431-1111.
