East Providence School District plans community meeting on school building safety

EAST PROVIDENCE — Following the most recent tragic act of gun violence in the nation’s schools, when 17 people were murdered at the Majorie Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14 in Parkland, Fla., the district administration led by Superintendent Kathryn Crowley has planned a community meeting on the topic of building safety for Tuesday evening, March 20, in the Elmasian Auditorium at East Providence High School at 7 p.m.

The superintendent said the forum is being held as “part of the process of keeping parents informed.” The district has several safety programs in place, including plans at the ready with the East Providence Police and Fire Departments as well as resource officers on daily at the high school and both middle schools.

Of note, Rhode Island State Police Captain Derek Borek, a city native and resident, will be attendance. Captain Borek is the State Police liaison on school safety matters.

“We want to help parents understand what we’re doing, to know that our schools are safe,” Superintendent Crowley said.

In anticipation of the meeting, the superintendent said she met with EPPD Chief Chris Parella and EPFD Chief Oscar Elmasian as well as district security director Tony Feola. She stressed, however, regardless of national events the school department is in compliance with all security mandates issued by the state and that conversations with public safety officials have been and will to continue to be ongoing.

“The meeting is really about informing parents and to try to answer any questions or concerns they have as best we can,” Superintendent Crowley added.

Officials scheduled to attend the March 20 meeting include: Rhode Island State Police Captain Derek Borek; East Providence Police Chief Christopher Parella; East Providence Fire Chief Oscar Elmasian; School Superintendent Kathryn M. Crowley; Director of Security Anthony Feola; School Committee Chair Charles S. Tsonos; School Committee Vice Chair Jessica Beauchaine; School Committee Clerk Nathan Cahoon; School Committee Member Anthony J. Ferreira; School Committee Member Joel Monteiro; Martin Middle School Resource Officer Cheri Almeida; Riverside Middle School Resource Officer Tammy David; and East Providence High School Resource Officer Doug Borden.
