EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence will host a public informational meeting Wednesday night, April 24, to discuss previously announced plans by the state to reconstruct the Henderson Bridge connecting the city with the East Side of Providence.

Expected to be in attendance Wednesday night are East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, East Providence City Councilors, Representatives from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, State Representative Liana Cassar (District 66, Riverside/Barrington), Rele Abiade, Senior Policy Advisor for the Office of U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, staff from the East Providence Department of Planning, staff from the Providence Department of Planning and Development The evening will allow residents and interested parties to question officials and view early design concepts
from RIDOT for a reconstructed Henderson Bridge.
Replacement of the structurally deficient bridge over the Seekonk River, which is estimated to cost between $60-70 million, was announced in February of this year. Rhode Island’s other U.S. Senator, Jack Reed, was credited with gaining access to almost $55 million to be earmarked for the project through the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Henderson Bridge reconstruction was already included in the state’s “RhodeWorks” initiative with a targeted start date of 2025. However, the infusion of federal dollars to the project moved the timetable up to as soon as possible.
