Howard M. "Howie" Springer, a longtime resident of Riverside, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the age of 80. He is survived by Courtney Saunders Springer, his wife of 45 years; a son, Clinton E. Springer of Rehoboth, Mass.; a grandson, Eric Springer of Mashpee, Mass.; and a sister-in-law, Tracy Saunders Huntington, and brother-in-law David Huntington of Williston, Vt. He was predeceased by his parents Mildred Martin and Howard J. Springer, and a grandson, Clinton E. Springer II.

He spent 43 years as a commercial fisherman, enjoying the freedom of working Narragansett Bay and earning great respect for the waters he fished. He loved boating and camping off of Prudence Island. He was also a NASCAR fan. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with many beloved dogs, cats and other pets. Before retiring in 2010, he was employed, for 10 years at Miriam Hospital in the Environmental Services Department.
