Letter: Senate needs to vote on animal abuse bill

Posted

To the editor:

As a Rhode Island veterinarian, Barrington resident, and voter, I’m anxiously waiting for the Rhode Island Senate to finally give a vote to H.7456, a commonsense measure to prohibit one of the worst forms of animal abuse: the confinement of hens in cages so small the birds can barely move, a cruel practice still used by some egg producers.

Science and commonsense tell us that chickens suffer immensely in these cages. These abusive conditions are also a threat to the health of Rhode Island families, as research has found that caged chickens are significantly more likely to transmit Salmonella and other dangerous bacteria. Eggs are the leading source of Salmonella poisoning in the US, which can be deadly to children and the elderly.

I respectfully call on Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and Senate Judiciary Chair Erin Lynch Prata to allow a vote on this bill—which has enormous support from the Rhode Island public—before session ends.
