Bay View falls in girls’ Open State Tourney quarterfinals

Posted

Anna Metcalf’s outstanding career for the Wheeler School girls’ basketball program came to an end last weekend, as the Rumford resident and her Warriors teammates fell to Moses Brown, 61-54, in the quarterfinals of the Open State Tournament.
Metcalf finished her season averaging just around 17 points per game and her stay at the school as itsall-time leading female scorer with 1,523. She helped Wheeler reach the semifinals of the Division II championship playoffs in its first season competing in the second tier of the Interscholastic League and a year after the Warriors left the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council ranks and won the D-III title.
Against the Quakers in the state quarters, Metcalf netted 15 points. Earlier last week, Wheeler defeated fellow D-II foe Juanita Sanchez, 53-42, in the opening round of the state tourney. Metcalf scored a team-best 16, while adding eight steals and seven rebounds.
Bay View notes
The season also came to an end for the city-based St. Mary Academy-Bay View squad in the state quarters last weekend after the Bengals were edged by reigning D-II champs Johnston, 40-39, in the waning moments of the contest. Madison D’Ambra led Bay View with 14 points. Cassie Pare and Isabelle Palmisiano each chipped in six. D’Ambra led the Bengals in scoring for the season at around 15 ppg while Antonia Corsinetti, averaged about 10 ppg for the winter.
Hendricken notes
Another city resident of note, Bobby Fiorito, continues to contribute to the success of the Bishop Hendricken boys’ basketball team.
The junior guard, who averaged just over eight points a game during the regular season, netted 10 points for the top-seeded Hawks in their 76-55 win over Cranston East in the Open State Tourney quarters. Hendricken faces Cumberland in the semis Saturday afternoon, March 10, at 4 p.m. at URI’s Ryan Center.
