Herreshoff hosts the classics

Posted

A magnificent collection of sailing yachts gathered at the Herreshoff Marine Museum last week (Thursday through Saturday) for racing and reunions at the 2017 Panerai Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta.

Ranging in size from Herreshoff 12 1/2s to the 165-foot gaff schooner Eleonora, a precise replica of the famed 1910 Herreshoff-designed and built schooner Westward (“undoubtedly the fastest yacht in the world” when launched), the 43-boat fleet enjoyed lovely weather, although breezes stayed gentle during Friday’s main race.

Boats set out at around 11 a.m. Friday from the museum, then waited until 1 to start. The breeze filled in out of the north, then died, then finally returned from the southwest to push the boats home.

On Saturday, with the breeze still feeble, the boats raced from Bristol to Newport.

Another highlight was the Living Boat Show held Thursday evening with boats at the dock and on moorings available for public viewing. Friday evening featured the regatta dinner attended by some 250 guests.

Taking home trophies were (class, boat name, type, owner/skipper):

• Vintage Grand Classics - spinnaker: Marilee, NY 40, Timothy Rutter

• Vintage Corinthian Yachts - non spinnaker: Procyon, Fishers Island 31, Bruce Bradley

• Vintage Corinthian Yachts - spinnaker: Angelita, 8 Meter, Skelsey/Croll

• Vintage Day Racers - non spinnaker : Kid, Race-About Sloop, David Snediker
