The Martin Middle School boys’ outdoor track and field team captured the 2019 state championship, an event held in Narragansett on Sunday, May 19. The Wildcats won the title by a narrow two points.
Between the MMS girls’ and boys’ teams, it was the third time in the past years either of the Wildcats have won the state title, while the other finish was a runner-up in 2018.
“Going into the state meet I knew we had a chance, but it was going to be tough and I explained to the boys that we needed to squeeze out as many points as possible in order to win and that they did,” said MMS head coach Mike Almeida.
Jared Gibbons led the MMS boys, winning the 100 meter, the 200, the long jump and running a leg of the winning 4x100 relay.
“In my nine years of coaching Martin, it was one of the most clutch performances I had ever seen,” Almeida said of Gibbons.
Martim Moniz was also a standout, finishing second in the long jump, third in the 400 and also running on the 4x1 team. Brandon Rowe also was part of the winning 4x100 relay and was sixth in the high jump. Caleb Luna placed sixth in the 400 and was the fourth leg of the winning 4x100m relay.
Andrew Worden ran the “race of his life,” according to Almeida, with a personal best in the 3,000 by over 32 seconds to place sixth. Ryan Decampos also placed in the 800 earning sixth.
The rest of the Wildcats to contribute included Sam Taromina, Max Collins, Ryan DeCampos, and Caleb Luna, Hunter Robbins, Peter Caron, Cameron Chase, Jayden Delgado, Trent Jackson, Kaleb Soares, Seth Soares, Toby Gwin, Darlin Herrera, Ethan Latrobe, Jerry Mercedes and Drew O'Brien.
On the girls’ side Kenna Wigginton placed sixth in the long jump and was part of the 4x100m relay team along with Candace Daniels, Amari Johnson and Emma Heatherton that also placed sixth.
