EAST PROVIDENCE — More details are filtering out following the stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon, May 1, in city at the Onna Moniz-John Park/Central Avenue Playground, which led at least one of the victims to seek medical attention at hospital.
According to witnesses of the event, approximately 20 teens and young adults congregated at the scene around 2:30 p.m. They were drawn there because of a planned confrontation between a 19-year-old resident of the city, known to police and with a record of infractions against the law, and the eventual teenage assailant, a 17-year-old male, in the stabbing.
The situation rapidly deteriorated as the perpetrator turned his assault on another of those in attendance, a 16-year-old male,
Though some of those involved were students at East Providence High School, district officials were quick to stress the incident was not school related, nor was it a case of bullying.
Also, a video of the incident, purportedly shot by a least one of those in attendance using a cellphone, is alleged to exist. School officials are working in concert with law enforcement to determine if any video is actually available.
According to the EPPD report on events, when officers arrived Wednesday, they located the juvenile victim in the park with a stab wound to his back and immediately began rendering aid. Police said the victim was transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a non-life threatening injury and was later released.
The suspects, including another male, 16-years-old, had fled the area in a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old female and were later apprehended by police in a driveway on Freeborn Avenue.
After further inquiries Wednesday evening, police termed the reasoning for the incident as typical "nonsense" between teenagers that unfortunately grew out of hand. And they described the weapon as a three/four-inch folding pocket knife.
The three suspects were charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Conspiracy. Two of the juveniles, one male and one female, were processed and released. The third juvenile, the assailant, is being held at the Rhode Island Training School. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, May 2.
