EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Fire and Police Department personnel responded to a two-alarm incident around noon on Sunday, March 11, at 13-15 Knowlton St. in the Riverside section of the city.

Upon arrival, crews found the structure engulfed in heavy smoke and with flames emanating from the basement windows, according to Chief Oscar Elmasian. Two residents were trapped in the second story of the home. One leapt from a window, another needed to be evacuated with assistance. The home was deemed uninhabitable.

Chief Elmasian said some firefighters suffered injuries engaging the incident, including one who needed to be transported to hospital with what could be a significant ailment. By approximately 3:30 p.m., the situation was under control and all personnel were headed back to their respective stations.

Chief Elmasian said the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.
