Revs recognize Bayside FC's role in youth soccer development

East Providence-based organization receives $10,000 scholarship from MLS side

FOXBORO, MASS. — Bayside FC of East Providence will be the initial recipient of the first New England Revolution and the Revolution Academy scholarship, recognizing grassroots soccer organizations in the region.

Bayside FC developed current New England Revolution midfielder Isaac Angking from 2009-2013 before he joined the Revolution Academy and later signing his professional contract with the team in January of 2018. Bayside FC will be awarded $10,000 in recognition of its development of Angking, the New England Revolution’s fourth "Homegrown" player.

"Our club is very grateful for the generosity of the New England Revolution Academy. With this donation, we’ll be able to provide greater opportunities to more players,” Bayside FC president John Mark Andrade said. “We look forward to continuing the development of top players in our region with our strong alliance with the Revolution Academy. Isaac’s determination and talent allows him the opportunity to serve as a role model for Revolution Academy and Bayside FC players as he embarks on his professional career."

The scholarship is part of an increased investment in youth development by the Major League Soccer franchise and its Revolution Academy. The Revolution has launched two new programs – an initiative to bring free soccer training to underserved players in Boston and the scholarship program to reward alliance clubs for their role in developing first team players.

“We’re committed to discovering and developing young talent and making the game accessible to talented players throughout New England,” Revolution General Manager, Michael Burns, said. “While our academy teams are fully funded, we recognize the need to make the game more accessible to kids throughout the region to further progress youth development. We feel these new programs provide another positive step in expanding the Revolution Academy's involvement in youth development throughout the region.”

Recognizing the important role alliance clubs play in nurturing young talent, the Revolution Academy is investing back in the soccer communities that develop Homegrown players for the Revolution's first team and has established a scholarship program for Academy Alliance Partners. The scholarship will be awarded when a partner club’s former player signs a first team contract with the Revolution and is intended to recognize the role the alliance clubs provide in developing players who join the New England Revolution Academy. The Revolution Academy formed its U-12 Academy Alliance partnership with Bayside FC, NEFC, and Valeo FC in April, 2016 to expand the Revolution Academy's reach in discovering and developing talent in the New England region.

"Our alliance partnerships have allowed us to cast a wider net to identify and begin the development process for players at a younger age,” Revolution Academy Director of Youth Development Bryan Scales said. “We’re already seeing success from the partnerships with the recent signing of Isaac Angking – a product of Bayside FC – to the first team. Moving forward, we want the scholarship to reward clubs like Bayside FC for their successes and support their future development efforts.”
