EAST PROVIDENCE — The sale of Metacomet Country Club in city to a group of existing members and local golf community stalwarts, including Brad Faxon, was formally made public last week.

Mr. Faxon, the Barrington native and the eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, joined former Wannamoisett Country Club head professional Steve Napoli, Brendan VanDeventer, Karl Augenstein and Tim Fay in the venture named “Metacomet Property Company,” purchasing the debt-ridden club from its membership. The process of taking the member owned non-profit club to a privately-owned for-profit entity began late last fall and actually concluded earlier this winter.

In a letter to membership, the group announced its immediate plans to reinvigorate the 94-year-old Donald Ross design, including a return to the course’s original moniker. The new owners wrote, “We will be renaming the Club back to its original name, Metacomet Golf Club, which is the name it was originally founded under in 1901 and until it was renamed to Metacomet Country Club around 1950.”

Included in the expected renovations are upgrades to the club house, greens and irrigation system among other aspects of the grounds. Immediate updates mentioned in the letter were patching and repairing the club house roof, interior painting, new carpeting and flooring, new furniture and other amenities.

“As far as the golf course goes, we intend to bring Metacomet back to the pristine conditions the members enjoyed throughout its history. Expect to see a return to the excellent greens conditions, which have always been a staple at Metacomet; ones that have been manicured as well as any in New England,” the letter read.

In addition, the ownership group said it has already engaged the city about the future moving and replacement of the maintenance barn currently located just inside the property off of Veterans Memorial Parkway to another part of the parcel likely closer to Lyon Avenue. And as part of the purchase agreement, the owners noted their option to at some point construct residential units on the site.

On the latter topic, the letter read, “Also, just to reiterate and contrary to rumors that are swirling around the state, we are planning on keeping Metacomet an 18-hole championship Donald Ross designed golf course. Yes, we are planning on having some multi-story residential condo development, but it will likely not begin until the end of 2020 or 2021 and we would have minimal disruption to the course and this great design.”
