Recreational boating may be a year-round sport for some, but for most the traditional recreational season is a little more than two months away.

“First District Coast Guard, Northern Region. unfortunately has already recorded one too many casualty reports with regards winter recreational boating this year,” says Westport Flotilla 6-18, Coast Guard Auxiliary.

In response, the Coast Guard is encouraging safe boating awareness and safe boating education.

In an effort to reduce boating incidents, injuries and casualties. Coast Guard Auxiliary units around the country are conducting boater education courses. Westport Flotilla 6-18 will offer a safe boating course entitled About Boating Safety. Enrollment is now open and boaters of all ages are encouraged to attend.Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. and the course fee is $35.

A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion. For more information or to enroll, email instructor Frank MacKinnon - LazyDaze4@Verizon.net or call 781-686-2787

“It’s extremely important to get the safe voating message out,” said James Stevens, flotilla commander. “But it’s even more important for us to realize that boating casualties aren’t just numbers. They were friends, parents, spouses, sons, and daughters. Hold your loved ones accountable and make sure they take the right steps to come home safely no matter what time of year they're recreational boating.”
