To the editor:

The election of Donald Trump on Tuesday seems to have shocked many people in our country including pollsters, politicians and members of the news media. 

Liberal demonstrations have broken out in several of our major cities by citizens who are equally shocked and seemingly unable to accept the results of the most contentious election in recent memory. How in this age of digital communications and technology could so many people totally miss the boat?

Three issues come to mind considering this dilemma:

• Why are so many citizens of our country unable to accept the will of the people? Have the liberal demonstrators given up on our democratic system of government, perhaps in favor of socialism or even anarchy? 

• I believe that the media itself is largely responsible for misleading the people. The political news as reported by all forms of media during this presidential election has been biased and misleading to the extent that the election of Mr. Trump seemed almost impossible. It seems that members of the media also drank the cool aide of their biased reporting and believed their own reports. 

• Both the media and our politicians, on both sides of the aisle, have ignored the will of the people for many years. That is exactly why the reviled Tea Party came into being and has now morphed into a significant part of the Republican Party. The silent majority finally decided it has had enough and elected Mr. Trump. 

My advice for all citizens is to accept the results of the election and give President-elect Trump a chance. He was elected because he is an outsider and promised change. Referring to our national capital, he vowed to “drain the swamp.” Draining the swamp and jump starting our national government seems to be to everyone’s advantage. 

The political division of our country has been obvious for many years and significantly increased during President Obama’s administration. It is time to put our emotions aside and heal our country. Good luck to Mr. Trump and God bless the United States of America.
