Martin Middle School Theatre Co. presents 'Arsenic and Old Lace'

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Martin Middle School Theatre Company is bringing back to the stage an old favorite, “Arsenic and Old Lace," for its winter performance.

It was one of the initial shows when the theatre company first began over 20 years ago and is the story of two kindly old ladies who assist lonely old men to their end with a tasty glass of poisoned homemade elderberry wine. There are a number of other quirky characters all of whom add to the hilarity.

Many students have been involved in this theatre company with some going on to a serious career in theater.  Some of the current students had interesting comments to share about their involvement in theater through this company.  They had such comments as, “It’s given me a chance to get involved and meet some great people” from Colin Monteiro. “ It’s been a good ‘job’ and has given me new experiences”, from Jacob Stone.  Danny Strother has become involved in this theatre company only after leaving Martin and going on to East Providence High School and says, “It has brought me out of my comfort zone and helped my confidence.”  Jillian Aronhault has been involved for four years, playing a myriad of different roles and shared that it is a good way to learn to be my own self without any judging.”  Juliet Antonio’s favorite show was “The Princess Bride” and she said that through theater she has found what she wants to do with her life and that it has helped with structuring her time.  Meredith Peixoto has been involved for four years now; she had always wanted to do theater and has “ had the opportunity to do it here”  For some, like Dean Hernandez, it provides the opportunity to play characters – “often from another world. “

The theater company was created by Judy de Perla and Susan Tullson but now continues under the very able direction of Jessica Poore and Geoffrey Higginbotham. Ms. Poore decided to reprise “Arsenic and Old Lace” because it has been a while and it is a way to value the theatre company’s beginnings.

Shows are January 14 and 15 at MMS. Curtain raises each night at 7 p.m.  There is a short pre-show of fractured fairy tales beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Tickets can be purchased at the door beginning at 6:15 for $5 each.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
