More than 1,500 athletes from around Rhode Island will descend on the University of Rhode Island for the Special Olympic Games this weekend.
But before the contests begin, the olympic torch will make its way through the state — including the East Bay — all the way to the campus in time to light the flame during opening ceremonies Friday night.
The torch will make its way through the East Bay Friday afternoon, beginning at noon at the East Providence Police station on Waterman Avenue, continuing onto Pawtucket Avenue, Bullocks Point and Willett Avenue before hitting Barrington around 1 p.m.
From there, torch runners will carry the flame along Route 114 through Barrington Warren and Bristol, reaching the Mount Hope Bridge at about 2:40 p.m.
After getting a ride over the bridge and a short rest, the runners will continue along 114 in Portsmouth around 3 p.m., before turning onto East Main Road and continuing on to Middletown.
Opening Ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Meade Stadium on the URI campus. The ceremonies include the parade of athletes, the entrance of the Torch Run Final Leg with the Flame of Hope and the lighting of the Special Olympics Cauldron.
In addition to competitive events, Saturday includes the opening of Olympic Village and the Healthy Athletes Wellness Village. The Olympic Village is an area filled with fun and interactive events for athletes and their families to enjoy. Healthy Athletes Wellness Village is located in Olympic village, offering free vision, dental, hearing and fun fitness screenings along with massage therapy for athletes.
