Posted

George Finn, the director of athletics and student activities at Barrington High School, has been named the winner of this year's NIAAA (National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) State Award for Rhode Island — the honor is bestowed on the athletic director who has distinguished himself on a national level.

He will receive his award at a banquet on Thursday, April 2, at the Crown Plaza in Warwick.

Mr. Finn is a fixture at Barrington High School sporting events, but his service goes well beyond the local school. He is the director for boys and girls lacrosse for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (since 2001), serves as chairman of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Executive Board.

His is currently finishing his second term as a boys lacrosse rules committee member for the National Federation of State High School Associations, and is also a committee member of the RI Department of Health Board of Athletic Trainers.

He is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, and is a licensed athletic trainer in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Mr. Finn has been involved in athletics for many years. While attending Northeastern University, he interned with Bowdoin College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the New York Jets. Mr. Finn began his career at Charles River Sports Therapy, and as the head athletic trainer for the Boston Bolts Professional Soccer team.

In 1989, he accepted a position at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine as director of sports medicine. In 1995, he was also appointed assistant director of athletics at Bates. In the summer of 1999, Mr. Finn became the director of athletics and student activities for Barrington.

Anyone interested in attending the banquet should call Jean Moura at 247-3158 or Beth Penkala at 245-4560 or 529-3236. The ticket deadline is March 26.
