Barrington hockey bounced by Burrillville in playoffs

The run is over. The Barrington High School boys' hockey team's run through the Division One playoffs came to an end on Saturday night, as the Eagles dropped their second straight game against Burrillville and were eliminated from postseason contention. Barrington, which opened the playoffs with a pair of wins against Prout, lost 6-1 in the first game against Burrillville on Friday night. A 7-2 loss a night later for the Eagles meant the end of the season. "It was frustrating to a degree because we didn't have the consistency," said Barrington coach Derek Borek. Barrington skated hard in every shift against Prout in the opening playoff series, said Borek, but struggled to maintain that approach against the Broncos. Burrillville, meanwhile, capitalized on the Eagles' inconsistent play. In game one, the Broncos scored on a power-play in the first period and netted two more goals to mount a 3-0 lead halfway through the second period. Barrington's Stephen Paras found the back of the Bronco's net to cut the lead to 3-1, but that was as close as the Eagles would get. Burrillville scored three more goals to finish out the game. "We didn't come out to play. We played terrible," said Borek. "We had no hard effort. We had a few kids going hard, but you need the whole team going hard. "Burrillville's good, but they're not overpowering. We just didn't play well." Barrington showed life at the start of the second game and trailed only 3-2 heading into the third period, but made some costly mistakes in the third period. "We made the little mistakes that you can't afford to make," said Borek. The Broncos scored four unanswered goals in the final period and skated away with the 7-2 victory. "The problem was the consistency," said Borek. Barrington will graduate a group of seniors that includes defensemen Jeff Scharver and Derek Carlson. "It's a special bunch of seniors we have this year," he said. "They started when I first came into the program. In the past four years they had a good run." The Eagles will return a number of young players who saw plenty of ice time this year. Borek said next year's Eagles could be very good on the ice … as long as there is a consistent effort.
