Barrington track teams place at class championships

Boys are runners-up, girls finish in third

Posted

The Barrington High School indoor track teams competed in their respective class championship meets over the weekend. The local boys team finished second behind West Warwick and the girls finished third in their meet, behind Portsmouth and Westerly.

"We were runners-up, despite going in seeded in 4th place," wrote Barrington boys' coach Bill Barrass in a recent email. "West Warwick is a great team right now, and we were happy to come this close to them."

In the boys' Class B Championship, Barrington was paced by its strong relay teams. The 4x800 meter relay team won its event — the team includes George Wicker, Jamie Gunness, Calvin Hennessey and Eli Mitnick.

Barrington's 4x400 meter relay team of Troy Prebenda, Wicker, Hayden Ivatts and Mars Bishop raced to a first place finish also.

Barrington celebrated a win in the 3,000 meter race and the runner-up in the same event. Ivatts pushed to victory in the event while Eliot Laidlaw finished second. Anthony Pitts also scored points for Barrington in the same event.

Ivatts then placed third in the 1,000 meter race for Barrington.

Bishop won the 1,500 meter race and scored first place points in the 600. Sam Read had a great race in the 55 meter dash, finishing second with a time of 6.86 seconds. He then placed fourth in the 300, and ran a key leg in the Eagles' 4x200 meter relay.

Jack Dunn finished fifth in the weight throw and Josh Meranda was sixth in the 55 meter hurdles.

"It was a great day," wrote Barrass. "Once again the team rose to the occasion in a championship meet. We could not have expected anything better on this day."

Girls place third

The Barrington girls' indoor track team finished third in the class championship.

Annika Kelly and Sydney Polando finished 1-2 in the weight throw to score key points for Barrington. Kelly had a top throw of 49 feet, 11 inches while Polando was right behind her at 49 feet, 10.25 inches. Faith Polando was fifth in the event.

Lauren Richardson finished second in the 55 meter hurdles, crossing the tape with a time of 9.51.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Noelle Cooke, Jillian Walter, Erin Abbott and Claire Grover finished third in their event, while Sabrina Hacket, Anna Downes, Isabella Richardson and Kerry Eller finished fourth in the 4x800.

Katie Zitzmann was fourth in the 1,500 meter race, and finished fourth in the 600 meter race as well. Teá Bishop was fourth in the 1,000 meter race and Grover was fifth in the high jump.

Zitzmann, Elizabeth Edan, Grover and Walter teamed up to finish third in the 4x400 meter relay, and Cooke was third in the long jump.
