PORTSMOUTH — The R.I. Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) identified the body found on Teddy’s Beach in Island Park Wednesday morning as that of Ronald Atkins, 77, of Portsmouth.
RIDEM was contacted by Portsmouth Police at 7:13 a.m. Wednesday, following a call from a person who reported seeing a body in the water at the beach, which directly abuts the old Stone Bridge off Park Avenue.
Foul play is not suspected, said DEM spokeswoman Gail Mastrati.
“Mr. Atkins is believed to have been a kayaker; a kayak was found a short distance away. The medical examiner has taken custody of the body,” she said.
Fire Chief Michael Cranson said his department responded to the beach along with police.
“I got notified this morning at 6:15 (a.m.). Our guys were called down there,” Chief Cranson said Wednesday. “We confirmed the body was deceased. It was beyond resuscitation.”
