Brigida Costa Salgueiro Gomes, 91, of Warren, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at her daughter’s home in Providence.

Brigida was born on 28 November 1925 in Sao Paolo Brasil. She was the daughter of the late Joaquim Coelho Salgueiro and Ana Jacinta Costa, and the wife of the late Joaquim "Jack " Gomes. She was the sister of Januario Coelho who lives in France, and Ilda Cardoso of Lisbon, Portugal.

She and her family returned to her home town of A do Barbabas, Maceira-Liz, where she lived with her husband and children. The family immigrated to the USA and they settled in Bristol. Brigida did various jobs including working a the former Premier Thread Company on Thames Street in Bristol and also at the former American Tourister Plant on Main Street in Warren.

In 1972 she and her husband became the proprietors of the former Duke’s Cafe, now Jack’s Family Restaurant in Warren, RI. Brigida loved work, she was never an idle person. She loved to help those less fortunate than her in any way she could. She enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers (roses were her favorite), and sewing; no matter where she was, that needle and thread was at her side.

She leaves behind her children, Jack Gomes Jr. of Swansea, Maria Gomes Fontes Goncalves of Providence, Joseph Gomes of Swanea and Victor Gomes of Warren; her daughters-in-law, Fatima Gomes, Adella Gomes, Judith Gomes; and a son-in-law, Carlos Fontes Goncalves. She was the sister of Januario Coelho of France and Ildo Cardoso of Lisbon, Portugal.

She also leaves her grandchildren, Michelle Melo, William Gomes, Nicole Gomes, Jorge A. Gomes Cabral, Dr. Maria Bridgette Cabral Sciuchetti, Sarah Ana Gomes, Timothy Gomes, Amanda Gomes, Nicholas Gomes and Alyson Gomes; her great-grandchildren, Christopher Gomes, Brianna Melo, Madyson Gomes, Alexander Gomes, Eva Cabral and Bella Sciuchetti; and many nieces and nephews near and far. She was the sister of the late Jose Salgueiro, Joaquim Salgueiro, Julia Carmo, Cecilia Alves and Antonio Coelho. She will remain in our hearts forever.

Her funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, in Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Gifts in her memory may be sent to Hope Hospice, 1085 North Main St., Providence RI, 02904.
