To the editor:
I have lived in Tiverton since 2003, purchased a home here in 2009 and my daughter started kindergarten this year. With working 40-50 hours per week and taking care of two children, I was living under a shell in respect to the politics in my town. I was hearing horror stories of the crookedness of other towns thinking, “That’ll never happen here,” but surprise, surprise – it is!
I attended my first budget committee meeting in January and it was eye-opening. My initial reason for going was the proposed cut to the school budget, however, after researching and attending several meetings, the cuts go far beyond that. Several members of the Budget Committee have put in question the fire department budget, police department budget and our beautiful, new library budget. You think it, they want to cut funding to it.
A few years ago, they trimmed the fat from our out-of-control spending, however there is no more fat! If the majority of the Budget Committee gets their way, we will have irreparable consequences. No one likes paying increased taxes, but in order to keep our town the way it is, there is no option.
As a young person who has just opened her eyes, I urge you to get out there, educate yourself, spread factual information and more importantly, vote! Only 8 percent of our registered voters turned out to vote in 2016, so if you are a Tiverton resident, please consider voting in the Financial Town Referendum May 18-20, 2017. You can make a difference!
