Catherine A. “Kinny” Single, 90, of Barrington

Catherine A. “Kinny” Single, 90, formerly of Bullock Avenue and Atria Bay Spring, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. She was the wife of the late Herbert C. Single. 

Born in Arlington, Mass., a daughter of the late Neil and Mary (Gillis) MacNeil, she lived in Barrington since 1960. 

Mrs. Single was a Registered Nurse at Miriam Hospital for 17 years before retiring in 1989. 

Kinny was a communicant of St. Luke Church where she was a member and volunteer of various parish committees. She also was an active member of the Barrington Bayside YMCA and known by everyone for her positive view on life and of people. 

She is survived by her children, Jane DeLeo and her husband Raymond of Bristol, James Single and his wife Carolyn of Warwick, Paul Single and his wife Pamela of Menlo Park, Calif. and Anne Single of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren, Raymond and Amanda DeLeo, Ian, Angus, Charlie and Henry Single and a sister, Phyllis Whoriskey of Beverly Farms, Mass. She was the sister of the late Jane Dwyer and Margaret Nicholson. 

Her funeral was held on Saturday, March 4, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, Riverside with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Luke Church, Washington Road, Barrington. Burial followed in Forest Chapel Cemetery. wrwatsonfuneralhome.com

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
