Edward Joseph Carreiro, Jr. (EJ) of Maple Glen, Penn., died January 23, 2017, at Abington Hospice at Warminster in Pennsylvania at the age of 64 after living fully and purposefully with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Upon learning his prognosis almost seven years ago, his comment to his family was, “well someone must be in that 10% to live 5 years, why not me?”

EJ was born December 14, 1952, in Fall River and raised in Tiverton. He has resided in the Pennsylvania area for the past 36 years. He is the son of Dolores L. Carreiro (Sullivan) of Largo, Florida, (formally of Tiverton) and the late Edward J. Carreiro Sr.

EJ was a graduate of Tiverton High School, Class of 1970, and Providence College, Class of 1974. He attended Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla., and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy in 1975. While in the Navy he completed training in the Navy Fire Weapons School, more popularly known as TOPGUN, a training program to teach fighter and strike tactics and techniques to select Naval aviators and flight officers. He served aboard the USS Ranger in the Fighter Squadron 154 (Fitron 154) the “Black Knights”. He completed the Naval Electronic Warfare Course and the Combined Service Support Program. He was immensely proud of his service in the United States Navy.

He earned his JD from Whittier College Law School and began his legal career as a trial attorney in the Philadelphia area. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and admitted to the Federal Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He recently argued before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He was creative, zealous and effective in representing his clients during his 35-year career.

“EJ” was a Pathwork Helper and president of the Philadelphia Pathwork Region Board Directors. He possessed an unyielding passion and perseverance for Pathwork and helping those affected by addiction.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Tabeling Cilento; his brothers, Michael J. Carreiro of Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida, James S. Carreiro (Vanessa Lucarella) of Bel Air, Florida, Joseph L. Carreiro (Laura) of Tiverton, Matthew P. Carreiro of New York City; and his sister, Mary Frances Caine (Peter) of St. Louis, Mo.

He is survived by many Carreiro, Caine and Shroeder nieces and nephews whom he loved, his wife’s children Jessica, Amanda and Christopher Cilento, his dear aunts Elaine Clark of Rockledge Florida and Barbara Goncalo of Tiverton RI, cousins and many close friends including JR Shroeder, Christopher Felix and his former wife Christine Shroeder of Hatboro, Penn.

A memorial service was held Saturday, January 28, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Maple Glen Penn. Internment will be private.
