Fair at Coggeshall welcomes harvest season

Games, music and, of course, good food, welcomed another harvest season at Coggeshall Farm Museum last weekend.

The 43rd annual Harvest Fair took place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18 at the farm off Poppasquash Road. Guests enjoyed hay rides, stilt walking, live music and lots of food, including the annual pie bake-off, this year focusing on pumpkin pies. Kids played 18th century games and competitions at the living museum, including a two-person saw, sack races, corn shucking competitions and tug-of-war (known in the 1700s as French & English).

Popular traditional and Celtic folk duo Atwater-Donnelly highlighted a series of musicians that also included local singer/songwriters Sandy Pliskin, Gregory Waksmulski and Chris Monti. The popular dance troupe Ladies of the Rolling Pin reprised their performance, which has been featured at the fair since 1988.
Food vendors included Gilded Tomato, CC’s Sweet Potatoes and Del’s Lemonade. Coggeshall’s own jonnycakes were also available.

Set on 48 acres of coastal farmland, Coggeshall Farm is a living museum, recreating life on a typical 18th century farm with live actors and animals typical of the period, including sheep, chickens, turkeys, horses, cows and more. The farm is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. until Dec. 15, when it switches to its winter schedule of weekends only. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 3-12.
