We know that eating a healthy, balanced diet is linked to overall better health and decreased risk of disease. New research is suggesting that eating a healthier diet, particularly later in life, is associated with decreased risk of age related cognitive decline. When studied, people who ate more fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and soy protein were less likely to suffer from neurological decline as they got older. The same people tended to be more physically active, less likely to smoke, and had lower body weight. All of this information together suggests that healthy eating is important at all stages of life. Although the study wasn't designed to determine how much of particular foods people should eat, it does reinforce what we already know - a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and lean proteins is the way to go for optimal health.
