Heckert: With Tourister looming, time to address downtown

Posted

For the past two weeks I’ve written about the problem of empty storefronts on Main Street. I focus on this issue because it is one of the biggest concerns of residents. People understand that a vibrant Main Street is central to the Town’s overall health. But there is no simple solution to this challenging problem. There needs to be a concerted effort by the Town in cooperation with property owners and merchant groups.

I stated that some property owners need to make more effort to clean up and market their properties. I also made clear the need for the Town to improve and increase parking, while enhancing our entry ways and streetscapes. We should fully support our merchants’ associations marketing and promotional efforts, such as the Warren Walkabout in October.

Much of this work is already taking place through the efforts of our Town Manager, Town Planner, Economic Development Board, Discover Warren, the East Bay Chamber of Commerce and Town Council.

There will be increased interest and demand for goods and services when the Tourister Mill development begins leasing 12 to 18 months from now. I want the Town to be prepared to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Brandt Heckert

Incumbent Democratic candidate for Warren Town Council.
