John F. Hamlyn Sr., 92, of Warren, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016 at the Grace Barker Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late C. Shirley (Hird) Hamlyn.
John was born in Providence, a son of the late William and Nina (Saunders) Hamlyn. He was a echanical engineer for the Grinnell Corp. for many years.
A United States Army veteran, he served as a Technician fifth grade during World War II. He had lived in Warren for more than 20 years, coming from Providence. He was a graduate of Providence College with a Bachelor degree in English, and attended St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Warren.
Mr. Hamlyn leaves his children, John F. Hamlyn Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Diane Medeiros of Warren, Elizabeth Carter of Warwick, Nina Malloy of Rumford and Joanne Franceschi of North Smithfield; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a niece, Karen Todd of Exeter. He was the brother of the late William Hamlyn.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, from Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Bay Church, 645 Main St., Warren. Burial with Military Honors follows in the South Burial Ground, Sowamsett Avenue, Warren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Sunday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 5 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
