Letter: Katz and cronies cherish wallets over community

To the editor:

Regarding the Tiverton Public Library, it would appear that Justin Katz has fallen in love with statistics reminiscent of Billy Bean and his baseball metrics in ‘Money Ball.’ It must be said that none of his statistics appear to be false. It is also fair to say “There are lies, damn lies and statistics.”

As usual, Katz misses the point like most new-comers to town do. The point is that we, who have always proudly identified with the past and present accomplishments of our town, want our town, our beloved Tiverton, to be the very best it can be. That includes fire and rescue, police, our schools and our showplace library.

Mr. Katz is clearly looking for the cheapest way out, period. I would strongly urge people like Mr. Katz who identify themselves solely by their status as “taxpayers,” that is, who cannot see beyond their own miserly wallets, to look elsewhere for their residence. There are nearby communities which always seem to have room for “nickel and dimers.” Don’t listen to Mr. Katz or his cronies. Otherwise, you will get what you pay for: Fake Value.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
