Depth of team proves the difference for Barrington girls

Posted

The Barrington High School girls' swim team won just one event at the state championship meet on Saturday but placed swimmers in a number of events. The total team approach proved successful as the Eagles captured their third straight state championship.

Barrington finished with 331 points, well ahead of second place North Kingstown's 226 points and third place LaSalle's 221.

It was a good day for Barrington's relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team of Cali Diehl, Melanie Baker, Wanging Li and Danielle Gibalerio finished second.   Gibalerio, Melanie Baker, Julia Zulker and Sydni Diehl swam to an apparent second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, but was awarded first place after judges disqualified the North Kingstown relay team because a member of that group had an early start.

Barrington's Sydni Diehl, a freshman, was impressive at states, as she raced to second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.

Barrington had multiple finishers in some events. In the 50 free, Diehl finished second, while Zulker raced to fifth and Gibalerio tied for eighth. In the 100 free, the Eagles went two, three eight, as Diehl was second, Zulker was third and Gibalerio was eighth.
