Portsmouth Abbey sailing team wins at NESSA

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Abbey Sailing Team won the New England Scholastic Sailing Association's (NESSA) Terk Trophy in team racing Sunday, May 22, at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.

The Ravens, which finished first among eight teams, qualified by turning in a 12-win, two-loss day on May 21 in moderate sailing conditions, with winds between 5 and 15 knots.

The team followed up with three wins and three losses in the finals on Sunday, capturing first place with a final score of 15 wins and four losses. Finishing second was Greenwich (Conn.) High School with 13 wins and seven losses. The Ravens bested Greenwich in all four head-to-head races sailed over the weekend.

Sailing for the Portsmouth Abbey were Nick Gartner ’16, Jackie Morrison ’18 (of Little Compton), Patrick Rose ’17 (of Portsmouth), Grace Benzal ’17, Emily Bredin ’17, Sydney Welsh ’16, Jessica McJones ’16, and Kelly Shea ’16 (of Newport). Team members Nick Nadalin ’17 (of Bristol) and Marty Bulanowski ’18 provided shore support and were ready to step in to crew, if needed.
