Volunteers needed at Magaziner Farm

Posted

Whether you have a bright green thumb or can't keep a houseplant alive, you can help feed those less fortunate at a local community farm.

Magaziner Farm is in need of volunteers for the spring and summer season. The farm is a member of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank's community farming program. Located on Poppasquash Point in Bristol, the farm relies on volunteers from schools, businesses and community groups, as well as individual volunteers to provide fresh food throughout the growing season to those who could not otherwise afford it. The farm grows organic vegetables and distributes them to area food banks throughout the growing season.

Space for the farm is donated by Suzanne and Ira Magaziner. The farm is managed by Amanda Rubio and served by many East Bay volunteers. Volunteers are scheduled to work on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Some volunteers sign up for regularly scheduled days and others assist on a flexible basis.

Internships for high school and college students are available. Working at the farm also provides opportunities for students who need to fulfill community service requirements.

Volunteers of any age are welcome on the farm, and no gardening experience is needed. The 2015 season will begin on Monday, May 4.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the farm’s manager, Amanda Rubio, at rubio5727@gmail.com or 401-440-0287. Learn more by subscribing to the farm’s newsletter by emailing magazinerfarm@gmail.com.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
