Westport to offer Memorial Day salute Monday

Westport veterans invite all to join them to honor and remember those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces this Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

Town Veterans Agent Bradford Fish said that here will be remembrances and wreath laying:

· 8 a.m. at VFW W.A.&R Ouellette Post #8502 at 843 State Road.

· 8:20 a.m., American Legion James Morris Post #145 at 489 Sanford Road.

· 8:30 a.m., Latessa Square on Tickle Road in memory of Andre Roland Latessa and all Westport residents killed in Vietnam.

· 9:10 a.m., Fontaine Bridge, named after Spec. Normand Edward Fontaine, who was killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War

· 9:20 a.m., Westport Point on Main Road flower bouquet to honor those who perished at sea.

• The group returns to Town Hall, 856 Main Road where the parade marshal will assemble the parade which will step off at 10 a.m.

The parade heads to Beech Grove Cemetery for ceremonies. Parade participants include contingents from Westport Junior-Senior High School, police and firefighters, and Miss Central Massachusetts, Joclyne Nunes.

Guest speaker at the cemetery will be Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Wayne Raymondo.

After the half-hour ceremony, coffee and refreshments will be served behind Town Hall.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
