Mates East Side of Providence with East Providence

PROVIDENCE — The so-called "missing link" connecting the East Side of Providence with the main portion of the East Bay Bike Path with East Providence and beyond is about to be remedied.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced work has begun on the next off-road segment of the Blackstone River Bikeway, connecting to the India Point Park area in the City of Providence and providing the missing piece to the East Bay Path.

The segment, which measures about 3/4 of a mile, mates the existing on-road segment from Pitman Street and River Road to the Gano Street and Trenton Street area, following the Seekonk River waterfront through Gano Park where it will meet the George Redman Linear Park on the Washington Bridge. When completed, it will then give riders complete access to the existing 14.5-mile East Bay path, which starts in city at the base of Warren Avenue then onto Veterans Memorial Parkway.

"We are committed to building a good, solid bicycle network in the State of Rhode Island," RIDOT Director Peter Alviti Jr. said in a press release on the subject. "This project helps bring the Blackstone River Bikeway further into the City of Providence, connecting to the East Bay Path and other bicycle facilities within the City's growing network."

The $2.5 million project, which includes a $1.2 million construction contract and a budget contingency of $100,000, RIDOT will construct an off-the-road path by clearing, grading, paving, striping, and adding some railing and limited landscaping. Project completion is slated for Summer 2017.

The Blackstone River Bikeway, the state's third-longest bike path, currently stretches for 15.5 miles through the communities of Woonsocket, Cumberland, Lincoln, Pawtucket and Providence. Another six miles of this path is currently under design.
