Ascencao: The State House is broken

Posted

When our elected officials make decisions in back rooms and put State House insiders before the needs of our community, we all suffer. I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen legislators make a decision at a fundraiser in the middle of the night.

Or have seen representatives tell community members that they couldn’t possibly find time to talk, even as those same representatives held daily meetings with well-paid lobbyists.

Regardless of where you stand on the issues, we all know our government shouldn’t be run this way. We need real, comprehensive reform. That’s exactly why I will work to implement a line item-veto, pass term limits, enforce stricter campaign finance laws, and limit the influence of lobbyists. Until we change how we do business, nothing will change in this state.

Laufton Ascencao
Bristol

Mr. Ascencao is a Democratic candidate for RI House of Representatives District 68.
