Barrington All Stars' run ends in Bristol

Majors division team faces tough pitcher in elimination bracket finals

Posted

The Barrington Little League 12U Majors All-Star team met its match on Wednesday night, July 12, in an elimination bracket game at Bristol’s Vets Park, when the host Bristol team beat the locals, 3-0.

Barrington had lost to Riverside in the opener, 10-9, having blown a 9-4 lead in the sixth inning. But against the Bristol stars, it was their starting pitcher, Brad Denson, who did them in. The powerful right-hander went 5 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit while walking one and hitting a batter. All this coming before thunder and lightning forced an initial stop in the action. Then, the rains came right after that. Bristol had to change pitchers in top of sixth with 2 outs when Lucas Jerome came in and struck out the last batter to end the game.

“This group of Barrington 12's had defeated Bristol twice last year on their way to winning the 11U district tournament and advancing to states, where they finished in third place,” said Barrington coach Mike Raffa. “It's a credit to Denson to shut Barrington out, as we scored at least 7 runs a game and had averaged 10.2 runs per contest leading up to last Wednesday’s elimination game.”

Barrington manager Tom Crain said he couldn’t be more proud of his team, despite the loss.

“This year's Barrington 12U all-stars were a great team,” he said. “They were district champions as 11 year-olds, and lost to the two teams in the finals this year in very close games that could easily have gone their way. They won three games in between the two losses with excellent play in all three components, hitting, pitching and defense. Just as importantly, they played well together as a team. I look forward to watching and coaching them in the years to come.”

Team members included Harrison Cooley, Griffin Crain, J.T. Celico, Andrew LaPointe, Ben Ptaszek, Gabe Tanous, Matt Raffa, Aidan Aggarwal, Matt Davis, Dean Sequeira, Zack Berlinsky, and Eli Terrell.
