Two notable properties in the East Bay — the former Zion Bible College campus in Barrington and the American Tourister building in Warren — were hit by alleged copper thieves last week.
On Tuesday, July 15, Barrington police received a call from the police department in Warren, notifying officers of a vehicle seen fleeing the Tourister building after it was involved in an alleged copper theft.
Barrington officers tracked down the suspect vehicle at about 4:20 p.m. on Massasoit Avenue and ordered it over to the side of the road. Officers approached the driver and asked if he had been at the Tourister building in Warren, and he said he had.
Police then asked the man if he taken copper from that property and the man reportedly told officers he had received permission to take copper left outside the building. Officers asked the man to open his car trunk, but he said he was unable to do so. He also said he could not access the trunk through the back seat of the car.
Warren police officers arrived on scene and forced open the vehicle's trunk, revealing a large bundle of copper wire. The man said the wire was his, and Warren police then escorted him to their station to be booked.
On Sunday, July 19, the caretaker of the former Zion Bible College property called police after learning that someone had stolen copper pipes from a building on the campus.
The caretaker said that early Sunday morning, around 6:30 or so, her father had spotted a gray pickup truck exiting the campus while carrying copper pipes in the bed of the truck.
The caretaker said she was not sure which building on the campus had been hit by the thieves.
