Axel Weber and Erin Faucher place at recent tournament

Posted

A team of fencers from the Rhode Island Fencing Academy & Club, located in E. Providence, went to Boston Fencing seeking some coveted places at the Junior Olympics.

Axel Weber, from Barrington, made top-eight with a sixth place finish in junior men’s foil. With the finish, Axel improved his national rating from “D” to “C.” (Ratings range from “A” at the highest to “E.”)

Erin Faucher, also from Barrington, placed eighth in junior women’s saber. Erin presently holds a “C” rating earned in 2017.

The Junior Olympic Fencing Championships is a prominent, national event for athletes in the cadet and junior age groups (fencers aged 17 or 21-years-old and under respectively). The tournament requires athlete pre-qualification resulting in a pool of particularly skilled fencers experienced in national competition. Local fencing divisions conduct tournaments to determine which high-placed finishers will secure spots for the Junior Olympics.

The RIFAC team will compete at Junior Olympics in mid-February.
