Barrington battles back for key win over Newport

The Barrington 12-year-olds All Star team celebrated a comeback win against Newport 5-3 on Thursday night at Sherwood Field.

Andy Fletcher pitched a complete game for Barrington — striking out 10 Newport batters and allowing only three hits. The solid pitching proved key, as Barrington's offense was slow to get started.

Held scoreless through the first three innings, Barrington finally got rolling in the fourth inning when Jack Kriz, Joey Medeiros, David Raposa and Andy Fletcher hit singles in consecutive at-bats.

"We should have scored more that inning but had two runners thrown out on close plays at home plate," said Barrington manager Chris Abadi.

Barrington added another run in the fifth inning. Sam Faulkner drew a walk and scored on a hit by Aaron Brady. The inning also included a controversial call, which resulted in a delay in the game.

Barrington trailed 3-2 going into the top of the sixth inning, but that's when the local players put together a big rally.

David Raposa led off the inning with a clutch double to left centerfield. Then Jack Abadi followed with looper to right field that fell in. With the tying run on third base, Josh Leblanc hit sacrifice fly to left field to score pinch-runner Bryan Ivatts for the tying run. Thomas Rocha then hit a ball to the right centerfield gap that bounced off the right fielder, and Jack Abadi motored all the way from first to score the go ahead run. Sam Faulkner then hit hard single through the infield to score Thomas Rocha for an insurance run.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Andy Fletcher pitched masterfully, retiring the Newport batters 1-2-3. Fletcher also struck out the last two batters to end the game. Jack Kriz caught a great game behind the plate.

"The players really persevered in this game," said Abadi. "There was some bad luck and calls that didn't go our way which created some distraction but they really stayed focused and put together a great rally to win the game."

The elimination bracket win propelled Barrington into a Saturday showdown against Pineview, which lost to Darlington 10-3 on Thursday. Darlington and Middletown will play in a winner's bracket final (neither team has lost a game yet).

Portsmouth lost to Middletown on Thursday and dropped into the elimination bracket. Portsmouth will play against Bristol in a elimination bracket semifinal — Bristol knocked Warren out of the District II tournament on Thursday night.

Barrington will play at Pineview at 5:45 on Saturday.
