BARRINGTON — The Barrington entry into the District 2 Little League Baseball 8-10-year-old All Star tournament won the title Friday night, July 14, at Sherwood Field with an 8-2 victory over Rumford.

Visitors on the scoreboard, Barrington scored once in the top of the first inning, added three more in the third then broke the game open with four more runs in the top of the sixth. Rumford scored its two runs in the bottom of the third.

Barrington advances as the District 2 representative into the 2023 Rhode Island State championship tournament, which takes place July 22-30 at Hein Field in Lincoln.

Dominant throughout the district event, Barrington went undefeated, winning all four of its games by at least six runs. The tourney started with an 18-0 victory over Tiverton. Barrington beat Rumford next by a 9-3 score then handed Bristol-Warren a 15-7 defeat in the winners' bracket final.

Rumford rebounded from the earlier loss to Barrington with a pair of victories in the losers' bracket to reach the final: 17-2 over fellow East Providence outfit Riverside and 10-4 over Bristol-Warren.

Last Friday, Owen Ayres led off the game with a single for Barrington then eventually scored on a base hit by starting pitcher Seb Hyams.

In the third, Leo Espindle got the Barrington rally going with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Henry St. Onge then drove him in with a single. Next up, Ayres doubled to put runners at second and third. Chase Corcoran followed with a single to plate St. Onge. Ayres also scored on the play with some aggressive base running as Rumford fielders held the ball too long.

Down 4-0, Rumford got two back in the bottom of the third. Tegan Smith and Donovan Bazar both drew walks. Kasen Barros singled to load the bases. Vincent Fisher brought in Smith with a fielder's choice groundout. Carter Schott next singled to plate Bazar before the response ended when Schott was hit by a sharp grounder off the bat of Eli Sydney for the third out.

From there, neither side could muster any offense until Barrington's patience at bat paid off in the top of the sixth. The four-run outburst included three walks, a Rumford error and an RBI-single by Andrew Viele.

Hyams was the winning pitcher, throwing 4-1/3 innings before reaching his pitch limit in the fifth. Corcoran and Will Coutant closed out the victory.

Barrington is next scheduled to face the District 3 champion Saturday afternoon at 3 in Lincoln.  The full 2023 8-10 state tourney bracket can be found here...
