Survive and advance.

The Barrington High School boys basketball team outscored Cumberland 13-6 in the fourth quarter and held on for a 48-43 victory in the Division I quarterfinals on Tuesday night, Feb. 21.

With the win, the Eagles advance the semifinals of the Division I playoff tournament — Barrington will play against LaSalle on Thursday night, Feb. 23, at North Kingstown High School. The game tips off at 7 p.m. Bishop Hendricken will play against Classical in the other semifinal game at 5 p.m.

The Eagles entered the postseason as the three seed and hosted the sixth-seeded Clippers, who earlier defeated Mount Pleasant in a play-in game.

At the start of Tuesday night’s game, Barrington showed why it earned the three seed, as the Eagles raced out to a 10-0 lead.

Cumberland, however, climbed back into the game and only trailed 25-22 at halftime.

The Clippers eventually took the lead in the second half, 37-35, but the Eagles refused to quit. Matt Raffa knocked down a number of key baskets, including a long three-pointer with 2:01 remaining in the game. That shot gave the Eagles a 44-41 lead in the low-scoring battle.

With 1:23 left to play, Raffa hit two free throws and extended his team’s lead to two possessions — 46-41. The Clippers scored and cut the lead to three points, but Dan Coogan hit a free throw with 19 seconds left, making it a two-possession game at 47-43.

Nick Scandura secured the win with a free throw with 16 seconds left to go.

Raffa led the Eagles with 26 points, including six three-point field goals. Scandura scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and Raffa and Scandura scored 12 of Barrington’s 13 points over the final eight minutes.

Sean Bonneau added eight points and Coogan rounded out the scoring with three. Coach Mike Raffa also praised the play of Ryan Rigamonti, who provided valuable minutes off the bench.

Open tournament

With the win over Cumberland, Barrington will host a round of 16 game in the State Open Tournament on Thursday, March 2.
