Barrington Middle School girls lose to Thompson team

Posted

There won’t be any girls’ basketball championship banners hanging in the Barrington Middle School gymnasium this year.

The Lady Eagles tried their best to move along the title road during their playoff run, but ran into a tough Thompson Middle School team Thursday afternoon, losing by a final score of 41-22.

“The Lady Eagles got off to a great start before a very hostile crowd at Thompson, jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead behind a couple layups by Lyndsey Lemay and Dani Ceseretti, plus a three by Caroline McConaghy,” said Eagles coach Mike Topazio. “Thompson stormed back quickly scoring eight straight to take a 9-8 lead which they never relinquished.”

Thompson came in as a number one seed and showed why. Ahead by only five points halftime, the hometown team used a smothering box-and-one on top scorer Ceseretti which was very effective, along with multiple offensive weapons en route to the 19-point victory.

Coach Topazio, who has compiled a 110-17 record over the years, never questioned the Lady Eagles’ desire and effort. He was very proud of their campaign this entire year.

“The Lady Eagles ended their season with their sixth Elite 8 appearance in 7 years, but failed to advance to the Final 4 for the third time in past 7 years,” he said.

Boys win

The boys closed out the basketball history of the Barrington Middle School gym with a highly competitive 41-35 victory over Woonsocket to advance to the state Final Four.

In a game in which points were at a premium, Sean Bonneau scored 15, Jake Ignall had 10, Mike Raffa added 8, and Danny Coogan finished with 5.

"Beck Kegelman enjoyed his best sequence of playing time and made a beautiful baseline slash and pass to Nick Scandura for a 3-point play to give BMS a 23-15 halftime lead," wrote BMS Coach Bill St. Vincent.  "Second half scoring proved to be more difficult. But as the offense struggled the defense helped by Quinn McNamara remained tough although it could not stop Woonsocket from tying the score with about 8 minutes to go."

The teams traded leads for the rest of the game until Matt and Sean put the game away — each hit 2 free throws in the final minute.

"The game was emotional and the well-deserved victory was celebrated with a traditional cutting down of the nets," said the coach.
