The Barrington High School boys cross country team entered the state championship meet as the seventh seed, but powered to a fourth place finish.
Led by three runners in the top 33 spots, Barrington finished with 205 points, behind first place Hendricken (30 points), second place LaSalle (35 points) and fourth place Classical (111 points). Chariho finished fifth with 213 points, while Westerly rounded out the top six, with 216 points.
Barrington Coach Mike Katz said he was very pleased with his team's performance, and added that his squad was very relaxed prior to the start of the state meet, which was held at Ponaganset High School.
"There was a lot of singing on the bus," Coach Katz said.
The relaxed approach paid dividends for the Eagles, as five of the seven varsity runners turned in faster times than a week earlier at the class championships.
Brendan Fay was Barrington's top finisher, crossing the line 25th overall with a time of 16:51. Freshman Holden Vaughan was 29th overall with a time of 17:06, and Brian Donahue was 33rd with a time of 17:14. Jamie Gunness ran well, cruising to a 45th place finish with time of 17:28, and Kaden Voeller was Barrington's fifth finisher, clocking a time of 18:15. Voeller's time was 38 seconds faster than just a week earlier on the same course.
Coach Katz said Kaden did not seem to like the course during his first visit to Ponaganset, but realized the importance of a strong finish to the team's overall spot.
"We knew he had the potential," said Coach Katz.
CJ Hilty finished with a time of 18:50, and Calvin Hennessey clocked a 20:09.
The fourth place finish secured a trip to the New England Championship in Manchester, N.H. on Sunday. Coach Katz said this year's strong finish marked the 11th straight yet Barrington has finished in the top six spots at states.
