St. John’s Church Art Gallery will stage the opening of its third show on Friday evening, Feb. 9 from 5- to 7 p.m. The presenting artists will be R.W. Alley, Mary Jane Begin — both of Barrington — and Liz Goulet Dubois of Scituate. All three are illustrators of children’s books.

R.W. (Bob) has illustrated more than 100 books, including Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear series, There’s a Wolf at the Door: reimagined fairy tales by his wife, Zoe B. Alley, and the Elf-help series of self-help books. Mary Jane, adjunct professor at Rhode Island School of Design, is perhaps best known for her illustrations in R is for Rhode Island Red, The Wind in the Willows, My Little Pony and Dragons on Dazzle Island. Liz, also a teacher of illustration at RISD, is a prolific toy and product designer as well as author and illustrator of children’s books. You can also see her work in Highlights Magazine and at Newport Creamery, where she creates the Rhode Island-themed children’s menus each season.

The illustrations will be on display from Feb. 9 through mid-March during church office hours (Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.); all will be for sale directly from the artist. A selection of their books will be for sale at the reception; the artists will be happy to autograph them.

The public is welcome (especially children) to meet the artists at the reception. At 6 p.m., R.W. Alley will present a brief drawing demonstration. Kids with crayons and paper are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
