Barrington Eagles battle Bears in Pop Warner openers

The Barrington Pop Warner Pee Wees blasted New Bedford in the season opener on Sunday, 20-0, despite having two touchdowns called back because of penalties.

In other games, the Mighty Mites refused to allow a single first down against New Bedford in a 0-0 tie, while the Junior Midgets battled back from a 12-0 deficit to cut the lead to 1 before falling 24-11. The Junior Pee Wees played a tough Bears team, losing 19-0.

Mighty Mites

The Barrington Mighty Mites played a solid game at their home opener on Sunday.

The offense took the field first and moved the ball behind quarterback Mitch Ivatts. Brett White ran the ball tough between the tackles, while AJ DiOrio and Kevin Robinson took advantage of their speed to get the ball around outside edge and up field. The offensive line centered by Aimon Bickford and Hunter Hughs was an intricate part of the Eagles moving the ball. Caleb Hopkins, Blake Dolan, Luke Deschenes, Luciano Cicione, Ryan Martin, Aidan Riccitelli and Madison Rodrigues made key blocks on the offensive line, but the Eagles were unable to punch the ball into the end zone.

The Eagles defense kept Barrington in the game as Quinn Murphy contained the edge flawlessly as Jack Josephson made a few key plays. Shea Parish’s blazing speed along with the brute force of Owen Willard, Ben Martel and Kurt Donnecker shut down the Bears, not allowing a score, or a first down all day.

The Eagles had one last chance to score with under a minute remaining on the clock. Mitch Ivatts rolled out to pass while the brother combination of Jacob and John Raposa held their blocks allowing him some time, however the Bears secondary had the receivers covered leaving Barrington's quarterback scrambling towards the sideline. The close game played well by both teams ended in a scoreless tie.

Barrington will host Old Rochester on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Junior Pee Wees

The Pearson Travel Junior Pee Wee football team dropped the season opener 19-0 to a tough Bears squad which controlled both sides of the ball for most of the contest.

After a tough opening quarter where they fell behind 12-0, the Eagles were able to buckle down defensively and were led by strong defensive play from Joe Mederios, Ryan Anderson, Nathan Cobery, and Tyler Viera.

The offense had difficulty moving the ball but was able to string together a couple of nice drives that allowed the defense to get some well-deserved rest. The offense was led by Graham Vatter who was able to break a handful of solid runs behind key blocks from Nolan Gaus, Danny Lemos and Christopher Desisto.

The Eagles will look to get back on track this Saturday when they take on Old Rochester.

Pee Wees

The Bagels Etc sponsored Peewee football team started the year with a 20-0 victory over the New Bedford Bears  at home on Sunday afternoon.

The defense was rock solid, with great all-around plays from William Loew, Andrew Jameison, Briggs Dunphy and Jack Kelty. The first quarter was a back and forth battle. The Eagles were able to move the ball down the field behind the blocking of Ethan Tomulonis, David Raposa, James Anderson and Matt Daft.

The home team stopped the Bears with plays on defense from Puck Arnonne, George Alexandre, Conner Rowley and Dante Salvaggio midway though the second quarter.

Jax Gorman then hit Jay Schieffelin down the seam for a 25-yard gain down to the 3 yard line. On the next play Scotty Gausland darted in off tackle for the first score of the game (Willy Sanchez kick) to make it 8-0.

The Eagles got the ball back with two minutes left before the half. They ran a no huddle offense with completions to Bryan Ivatts, Schieffelin, Dunphy and Willy Sanchez.

The offense came up just short, with a ball batted away in the end zone as the half ran out.

Barrington stopped New Bedford on their first possession with big hits from Matt Daft, Conner Nelson, Bennett Durkin and Drake Van Ness.

Ivatts and Dunphy then moved the ball down the field with five hard runs between them for a few first downs. Gorman then ran an option play to the right and pitched to Gausland for a 25-yard touchdown, his second of the day. Luke McMananman, Will Arnonne and Asher Kranowitz had great blocks on the play.

The Eagles marched down the field again on their next possession with runs by Dunphy, Ivatts and Gausland. On a fourth and four from the 15-yard line Gorman passed to Sanchez just inside the goal line on a curl and out route for another touchdown.

Barrington ran out the clock going in for another score to end the game.

The Offense was led by the running of Gausland (two touchdowns), Ivatts and Dunphy with Gorman completing double digit passes for well over a hundred yards and a touchdown. Jay Schieffelin had many catches for over a hundred yard receiving, and Willy Sanchez caught a TD pass and kicked a conversion worth 2 points.

The Eagles will host the Old Rochester Regional Bulldogs Saturday at 1:30 at Victory Field in Barrington.

Junior Midgets

The Barrington Pop Warner Junior Midgets team sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods played its first game of the season on Sunday, dropping a hard-fought 24-12 decision.

The game started of slow in the first half, as the Eagles allowed 2 touchdowns but blocked both extra point tries.
