PROVIDENCE — North Kingstown midfielder Kathleen Viera scored 36 seconds into overtime to put the Lady skippers in the D-I championship to face Moses Brown on Sunday at Roger Williams University.

It was a tough loss for the defending champion and number one seed, Barrington. They got on the scoreboard in the first half when senior forward Madelyn Cox slid the ball over to senior midfielder Claudia Kriz who beat Skippers goalkeeper Abbey Pezza to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Eagles had multiple chances to to increase their lead. None better than a scoring bid by Cox and Lillyanne Dunphy who had a wide open goal after the ball slid by Pezza, but the duo was unable to hit the ball into the net.

The Eagles held the lead until Viera scored with just six minutes left in the game to tie the score at 1-1.

Viera and her teammates stormed the net after a penalty corner. The Skippers took multiple shots on Eagles goalkeeper Caileigh Durkin, before she dove for the ball and seemed to have it under her glove. Viera and teammate Dempsey Campbell quickly dug it out and Viera shot it into the net to tie the game.

The penalty corner was called when Eagles midfielder Alexy Carolan attempted to knock the ball off Campbell’s stick as she air dribbled it into the circle in front of the Eagles goal.

The Eagles started with the ball in the 7 on 7, 10 minute overtime, and proceeded into the Skippers field. A Skippers defender made a stop and whacked the ball back towards the Eagles goal. Viera sprinted and outran the Eagles to the ball and flew in alone on Durkin, who ran out to the right side of the net to meet her. The goalkeeper made the initial save and tried to boot the ball away from Viera, but the senior midfielder collected the ball and smashed her second shot into the net for the win.
