The Barrington Pop Warner varsity cheer team has even more reason to cheer.

The local team finished second at the National Pop Warner cheer competition in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month, capping a stellar season that also included a state championship and a regional title.

Cheer coordinator Susan Moran said she was extremely proud of the local girls.

"I am so pleased with the results of the National Pop Warner competition," she said. "The team competed so well under the pressure of a national competition; finishing second at a competition of this caliber is amazing."

Ms. Moran said the Barrington varsity cheer team features athletes of varying skill levels, but the team improved throughout the season.

"The team is a combination of a few very experienced cheer athletes and several others totally new to the sport - they came together this season with a determination to succeed - and there was no stopping them," said Ms. Moran.

The cheer coordinator also praised the work of the team's coaches: sisters Kayla Toman and Jamie Testa.

"They are the best cheer coaches, we are very lucky in Barrington to have them," said Ms. Moran. "Their expertise in maximizing strengths leads them as coaches and the team in achieving positive results starting with their Grand Champion win earlier in the season at the state competition."

This year's varsity cheer team members are Ava Bowman, Maddox Cooley, Abby Gomersall, Lindsey Leonard, Greta Lepore, Kaleigh Moran, Kate O’Brien, Emily Oldham, Emma Schnippering, Evalin Tirado, Isabel Vazquez and Becca Wilcox. Olivia Stack and Angelique Mendes served as BHS student demonstrators with the team.

Fund-raiser and banquet

After qualifying for nationals, the Barrington Pop Warner varsity cheer team needed to raise money to pay for the trip to Florida. A number of residents and businesses stepped up to sponsor the team.

There will also be a pasta supper fund-raiser on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Barrington Democratic Club. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m.; tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children 10 and under. People can purchase tickets at the door the night of the event or call 332-4853 for more information.

Barrington Pop Warner Cheer and Flag Football will hold its annual end-of-the-year banquet on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Venus deMilo restaurant in Swansea, Mass. The varsity cheer team will be recognized during the banquet along with all the teams that won flag football championships. League officials will also present four-year jackets to a group of boys and girls.
