The Barrington High School girls' tennis team is no stranger to adversity.
The Eagles opened the season with an almost entirely new line-up, after losing many players to graduation and the top singles player who moved to South Carolina. Now, just six matches into the year, Barrington is learning to cope with a new challenge as number two singles player Julia Forte was forced off the court because of an injury.
Barrington coach Betsy Brenner said Forte suffered a bad ankle sprain and was taking a two-week break from tennis.
"Julia was playing so well before she went out," said Brenner. "We really miss her."
Forte was unavailable when Barrington traveled to Providence to play against Moses Brown last Wednesday. Without the hard-working netter, Barrington fell 5-2. Abby Voigt picked up a victory for Barrington playing in Julia's place, and the doubles team of Maddy Kahn and Jillian Walter won Barrington's other point.
"With everyone playing out of their normal positions, it's a huge challenge for the girls," said the coach.
"The bright side is that some of the alternates are getting varsity experience."
On Friday, Barrington overcame Forte's absence and notched a 6-1 win against Toll Gate. Brenner said she was very proud of her team in the victory.
"I thought the girls played very well," said Brenner. "It's tough because Julia is one of our most valuable players. I think we would have had a better showing against Moses Brown."
On Monday, Sept. 21, Barrington lost a tough match against Mt. St. Charles, 4-3. Barrington's Emily Deslauriers won her match at first singles and Voigt grabbed a straight set victory at second singles. Maddy Kahn and Jillian Walter won their match at third doubles. Barrington's second doubles team of Clara Lombardi and Andreea Dan lost a tough three set match.
Forte returned to the court on Thursday, Sept. 24, and helped lead the Eagles to a 6-1 win over Bay View. The Eagles travel to the state qualifying tournament this weekend.
