The Barrington High School girls swim team continued to dominate the rest of the field, as it won its fourth straight state championship at Brown University on Saturday.
The Eagles finished the meet with 300 points, while LaSalle was second with 284 points.
Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham praised the work of the team captains and the important contributions of the Eagles' younger swimmers. Gorham said Barrington's depth was a key factor in winning the state championship — in two separate events, Barrington had four swimmers score key points.
Sophomore Sydni Diehl performed well at the state meet, winning both the 50-yard freestyle (new state record time) and the 100-yard freestyle. Barrington also won a pair of relay events, including the 200-yard medley relay.
Gorham also mentioned standout efforts by Amanda Vesey, Cali Diehl, Kaley Swintak, Melanie Baker, Emma DiGiacomo, Rachel Baker and Julia Zulker, among others.
The Eagles led by 22 points heading into the final event — a fifth place finish in that final event secured the championship.
"This is just a great group of kids," said Gorham. 'They've got great chemistry."
Gorham said his swimmers understand the importance of "team."
"They come in here and I tell them you're a point, not a name," said Gorham. "They do what's best for the team. That can be hard sometimes."
Following the victory, members of the Barrington girls swim team celebrated by pushing their coach into the Brown University pool — it's a practice that is becoming routine for the Eagles.
"It never gets old," said Gorham. "You've got to relish it. I seem to enjoy it more and more."
